Four hundred and twenty-two million dollars of hair dryers came into this country in one year, on a single tariff line. The last federal survey that touched whether America makes any of them was shut down in 2011. What the country does still keep is a rulebook for the product, and behind one page of it sits a body count that went to zero.

The argument

America stopped counting whether it makes these. It never stopped buying them.

Everything in this category arrives on one tariff line. Under HTS 8516.31.00.00, the United States imported $422.4 million of hair dryers in 2024 and $369.5 million in 2025. In that single year China's share of it went from 70.9 percent to 53.7 percent, and the volume turned up in Vietnam, Malaysia and the Philippines. Exports on the same line run about $27 million and go almost entirely to Mexico and Canada, which is distribution moving, not production.1

Ask how much of it America makes and the honest answer is that nobody knows, because the government stopped asking. The last federal survey touching domestic production of this class of appliance was terminated in 2011, and even then it never broke hair dryers out on their own. There is no official United States market size for this product at any level. Every figure in circulation is a private model.5

What the country does have is a rulebook of its own. Federal rule puts a hand-supported hair dryer without integral immersion protection onto the substantial product hazard list, and behind that page sits one of the cleanest safety records the government keeps: 110 electrocution deaths between 1980 and 1986, twelve between 1991 and 1997, and none reported in the last window it measured.2

And the name is the phrase. In American search, hair dryer runs nearly three to one against blow dryer over five years, and it never flips.6 Twelve characters before the dot, no hyphen, no numeral, naming the product and the market it is sold into.
